Disney launches “Guardians of the Galaxy” roller coaster; take a look – Travel

Floating in space, rotating around the Earth, while everything, from vision to body sensations, happens in sync with the typical sound of the 80s. The new roller coaster Guardians of the Galaxy – Cosmic Rewind opens Friday 27, at Epcot, to the public, but the world press has been invited to try this, which is one of the main technological innovations of the disney for this summer season in the United States. In fact, the park has invested in attractions and services that use technology to expand and enhance the experience for the general public.

First Epcot roller coaster and first ride inspired by the film Guardians of the Galaxy at Disney, it is also the first roller coaster with reverse throw in the complex of Orlando. Plus it has trolleys that rotate 360 °: it’s an omnicoaster. “We put this technology on a roller coaster so we can move them in the direction we want you to see the action, while the car is moving at great speed,” explained Steve Spiegel, a member of the Disney Imagineering team, a division of the company working on the development of roller coasters.

The Guardians of the Galaxy course takes place in the dark, with various special effects. It is the largest indoor roller coaster in the United States at 18,600 m². The space is so large that there would be four Earth Starships inside (for those who aren’t linking the name to the object, that’s what Epcot’s symbol ball is called).

I tried the route at the attractions unveiling event to the world press, part of Disney’s 50th anniversary celebration, which began in October last year and continued until March 2023. The route is smooth, as if the trolley is actually flying. . As usual at Disney, it’s a family-friendly roller coaster, with no extreme hits, bumps or loops. My only recommendation: do not eat before you go and always look in the direction the stroller is pointing, so as not to get sick with the spins.

I’m anything but an ardent roller coaster fan. Before getting on board I was worried that the backward toss, along with the 360 ° rotation of the trolleys, would be a very strong combination. In the end, this game results in a pleasant and fun flying sensation.

Soundtrack and environment

Contacts with Rocket, Baby Groot, Gamora and other characters from the film already start in line, all covered, in the Xandar Wonders pavilion at Epcot. “We worked a lot with the actors themselves. In the queue, there are over 75 minutes of original content recorded with them. Our Disney imaginers (a group of park attraction creators) visited the sets of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 to assemble this piece, ”explained Ana McCarthy, Disney spokesperson for the Brazilian market during the event. “We also have over two hours of music created by the film’s composer (Tyler Bates).”

Everyone wants to rule the world, from Tears for Fears, was my first Guardians soundtrack. After testing 100 different songs for the sound of roller coasters, Disney engineers came up with six: the others are: I Ran (So Far Away), by A Flock of Seagulls; September, with Earth, Wind and Fire; Conga, with Gloria Estefan; Disco Inferno, by The Trammps; and One Way or Another, with Blondie. “They wanted to make sure the rhythms of the songs matched the movement of the trolley and the tracks,” says Ana. You never know which song will be played until the time of release.

Attraction is a milestone in the transformation Epcot is undergoing. After having completely renovated the France space in World Showcase, themed RatatouillePixar animation with Remy mouse around Paris, the park highlights its other three parts.

At World Nature, the Water Journey, an attraction of the character Moana, is under construction, with no opening date yet. For the celebration of 50 years, Beacon of Magic, the name of the commemorative lighting, highlights Spaceship Earth (at the World Celebration), as well as the icons of other parks: Cinderella’s Castle, at the Magic Kingdom; the Tree of Life at Animal Kingdom; and the Hollywood Studios Tower.

Technology at your fingertips in parks and hotels

Taken as a whole, Disney has unveiled other technological innovations. The MagicBand, a bracelet used to perform actions such as opening the bedroom door at the brand’s hotels and shopping in parks, has received an update. The release is scheduled for the middle of this year, but without the price being revealed, MagicBand + does everything the previous one did and more.

It allows, for example, to interact with the characters. As one of the golden statues, scattered throughout the four parks, passes, the visitor will be alerted by the glow of the MagicBand +. Then he is swinging his arm to hear voices. In total, 50 characters can be found in 36 statues. In Animal Kingdom, for example, Timon, Pumbaa and Simba, from the animation The Lion King, are in front of the Tree of Life.

By the end of the year, Hey Disney, powered by Alexa, will arrive at the complex’s hotels. Through the TV, guests can ask for information about services, set alarms and listen to 25 characters.

And fans of the saga created by George Lucas can already dream of a journey through Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. The attraction, which serves as an immersive hotel in the franchise-themed area of Hollywood Studios, opened in March of this year only to the public in the United States and Canada.

In the two-night experience, travelers become part of the saga, interacting with the characters, crew and other passengers. Halcyon Starcruiser windows show different angles of the galaxy as the course changes between destinations. The game includes accommodation and entertainment in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

The setting in the attractions of this area of the park itself is already spectacular, both in the pilots and shooters mission in Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run (a flight simulator) and in the battle against the First Order in Star Wars: Rise. of the Resistance (on trolleys sliding along the ground).

What else to see at Disney

Since the United States only opened to Brazilians in November last year, some Disney attractions are still new to many people planning to go to Orlando. Here are some of them.

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure (Epcot): It is literally a pleasure to walk around the kitchen with the Pixar Animated Chef Mouse. Feel the smell of food, the heat of the stove and the icy sneeze of popping champagne. The stroller rotates a lot, which can make some people nauseous – not eating before you go can cause indigestion.

Disney Spell (Magic Kingdom): The 15-minute nightly fireworks display continues to focus on Cinderella’s Castle in Florida’s first Disney park. But the enchantment, as the name suggests, from 1 October last year extends to Main Street (photo), the main street of the Magic Kingdom. The projections take visitors to the sea with Moana and into the clouds with Aladdin, between Disney and Pixar characters.

Harmonic (Epcot): The park has undergone several transformations and also won another night show on the occasion of the inauguration of the 50th birthday party, in 2021. For 20 minutes, lights, fireworks and animations projected in the center of the lake present 15 pieces from the from Disney and Pixar cartoons, including Frozen and Viva themes – Life is a party.

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway (Hollywood Studios): The first attraction starring Mickey and his gang opened just before the park closed due to the pandemic in 2020. As a result, many people were unable to make this train ride. Children and adults like it.
