Finally a good tennis match in this decade? If lately good simulations in this sports sector are rare, the management aspect is not left out with a new work of Rebound CG. The French studio presents Tennis Manager 2022 as a prelude to Roland Garros, a management game in the wake of Football Manager or Pro Cycling Manager.
When management emerges
When it comes to tennis as a sport, management is taken for granted. Managing a game, managing fatigue, managing emotions … There are many parameters to take into account as a player. And when we take into consideration the career aspect, the choice of coach, sponsors or academy to coach, gives Tennis Manager 2022 an annual license. We embody a manager with the personality and experience of his choice, with two options: create a tennis academy from scratch or join an existing academy. The first option allows to define the precise objectives of the academy and its means. Once you’ve recruited your first player or even created your talent from scratch (the novelty from the previous opus), the multitude of options unfold. Then we find the codes of Football Manager, with a space to receive important messages and make decisions.
From the hub you can then recruit other nuggets, manage the calendar and training of your foals, sponsorship contracts and above all allocate the technical staff to the players. Every tennis player or tennis player must have a main coach, a physical, technical, mental coach, the game plan and a physiotherapist. Note that the main manager can take care of many other aspects based on his skills (techniques for example) and that a manager can take care of more players, up to a limit of 4 assignments. A management of the coaches that we found very intelligent, without being cumbersome to do. You can manage a player while you are their manager or, conversely, just take care of the management. Either way, your assistant will ask you if you want to participate in the finals and coach a member of your academy even if you are not their coach to avoid frustration.
Single to double
Because in addition to managing the medium and long term in the career of the players, it is possible to take care of his nuggets in the game. Chattering, choosing the intensity of the serve, return, key points based on the qualities and defects of the opponent are necessary before the game. During the match, the title offers 3D rendering with a choice of cameras, possible tactical changes between points, chat … We can certainly find fault with the 3D modeling of the protagonists and exchanges, but it is a “concern” for most sports management games. Nothing bad then, even if we would have liked to have been a little more guided on the indications to give to steer a match in the right direction for newbies.
Finally, Tennis Manager 2022 provides the essentials for the genre and manages to secure a certain reputation without Rebound CG having a huge budget. The interface is undoubtedly the most ergonomic of its kind, we navigate the menus with pleasure without getting lost in the deluge of information. The big downside comes mainly from the difficulty slider : If the results of the athletes competing outside the academy are true to reality, recruiting an aspirant with great potential very often will make him climb very high in the rankings, and too quickly. On the other hand, we really struggled to get young or big players back into shape who were losing a lot, and having a few more chances to get back on track wouldn’t have been too much. Also the possibility of playing doubles.
Hugo Baston or Carlos Alacatraz?
The famous licensing problem. Like most sports or management games like Pro Cycling Manager, Most Tennis Manager players see their name changed and a lack of photos. Rafael Nadal transforms into Rafael Nabal, Djokovic into Djorovic or Iga Swiatek into Swietak. However, some French players are licensed to play, such as Richard Gasquet, Nicolas Mahut, Grégoire Barrère or Clara Burel. Several foreign secondary knives have also placed their trust in CG Rebound. Finally, the number of licensed and tennis players is quite low, but the studio left the possibility of starting a career with a mod previously downloaded from Steam Workshop. The experience is therefore much more enjoyable than seeing Hugo Baston and Carlos Alcatraz fighting at Roland Garros.
- Rather complete in running a Tennis Academy
- Realistic in opposite results
- Very easy to learn for a management game
- Ergonomic interface
- Management of live and multi-player games
- Added player creation
- Realistic in opposite results …
- … but often too simple in the results of the hopes
- Negative periods that are difficult to overcome
- 3D modeling in perfect match
- Absence of real names without mod
Fun! Wanting to draw inspiration from the best sports management games, the French of Rebound CG have succeeded in their bet to be at the level in this sector. Tennis Manager 2022 offers a very ergonomic interface despite the flood of information, easier to manage than its counterparts. It will certainly be necessary to go through a mod on the Workshop to get the real names of the players, but the title is very consistent in the different results of the tournaments over the course of the season. Running a tennis academy is a challenging exercise, although we regret limited 3D rendering of matches and too easy progress for young wannabes. In short, TM 2022 is a good game for any tennis manager or enthusiast, a great opportunity for the Roland Garros finish line.
