The section of Broadway Avenue between 159th and 218th streets was named after Juan Rodriguez.

Delia Sosa, a 64-year-old Dominican immigrant, walks down a short stretch of New York City’s Broadway Avenue called “Juan Rodriguez” but admits she doesn’t know who the man is.

“He looks like a Dominican to me by his last name,” he says.

When she learns the details of the exciting story behind this name, Sosa’s eyes widen in surprise.

This section of the street became for Rodriguez the biggest recognition of the American city.
