The Madison Twp store is the vision of two creative women who want to share DIY talents

The Atmosphere: A creative hangout space has recently been the scene of hat making classes, and a porch sign making class will be held on Tuesday.

Dethlefs of Fairfield has been running a traveling boutique for many years, doing shows in the region. He started turning furniture into recycled treasures.

Susan Cox, a Madison Twp. resident, she also started launching furniture and the business quickly grew into custom pieces and kitchen cabinet makeovers.

Cox, who worked outside the home, needed more space and Dethlefs had always planned to open a retail store. The women met at a Hamilton “Ruffles and Rust” craft show before the pandemic and reconnected as vendors at Holiday Whopla in Middletown.

“I saw this property posted on Mohawk Talk (a social media page) and thought it would be right for me, but it was more than I needed.”

It was then that Cox thought about sharing the space with Dethlefs. Retail in the front, workshop in the back and a creative area in the middle.

“It’s perfect,” Dethlefs said, noting that the boutique / lab combination gives them the chance to showcase their talents. “The hat lessons went well. Ultimately we as a company want to revitalize this central section on the outside. “

They envision bistro tables and lighting to transform the alley for wine and beverage tasting with area businesses, including White Dog Distillery on Central Avenue in Middletown. They smiled saying they have a “view” for the entire block near the Trenton-Franklin Road intersection.

“It’s not just for the girls, it’s going to be for the boys too,” Cox said.

Dethlefs describes their boutique merchandise as eclectic and fun with a local twist, like Madison Twp. unique Middletown pillows and shirts and works by local artists.

“It’s a little bit for everyone and relaxed. I didn’t want him to be haughty at all. I want women to come in here and feel comfortable, to be able to go out and talk, “she said.” We want it to be a fun atmosphere for the community. “

The store opened on May 16 and is scheduled to open on June 11. The shop is open Monday to Thursday 11am to 7pm, Friday 11am to 6pm and Saturday 10am to 4pm
